The Sussex Family History Group has worked for many years to make the records for Sussex more widely available to researchers of family history and have transcribed the Census Returns for many West Sussex parishes for the years 1841-1891 and the 1851 Census for Brighton. Some of these transcriptions have already been published as individual parishes on microfiche and/or in booklet form. The Sussex Census Transcriptions Series brings together these earlier publications with additional parishes and makes it available on CD-Rom.
The parishes are grouped according to the order in which they were enumerated and over time the intention is to extend the series to cover the whole of West Sussex and also adjacent parts of East Sussex. Additional Census years before 1841 (in the few cases where names were recorded) and after 1891 will also be added as they become available.
The Index provides the page number where the individual can be found in the transcription of the return which is organised as enumerated. It is thus possible to look up a specific individual in the Index and then turn to the as enumerated returns to find the other household members, neighbours and their recorded details.
The transcriptions have been prepared by experienced transcribers - people familiar with Sussex surnames and place names - and where necessary names have been cross-checked between census years to try and ensure the highest possible level of accuracy. However, as with all transcriptions, this publication is not intended to be a substitute for the original entries. Whilst every care is taken when transcribing, users are advised to consult the originals for verification.
The Brighton 1851 Census transcription contains over 60,000 entries.
