Sussex Census 1851 - A Transcription of the Entire County of East Sussex

Product Description

The 1851 Census was taken on the night of the 30th March. The returns give the names in each household; ages (not always reliable); the relationship of each person to the head of the household; sex; marital status; occupation; parish and county of birth.

The transcription of the 1851 Census for East Sussex was first publishe by Mrs C. June Barnes in a series of 23 booklets over fifteen years ago. At the time this was a pioneering project as few individuals or family history societies had attempted to make available a transcription of an entire county. Despite the increasing availability of census material on-line, many family historians believe that this transcription remains the most comprehensive and accurate available.

This edition of the 1851 Census for East Sussex combines all 23 booklets onto one CD and comprises a full name index for each grouping of parishes and a transcription of the parishes "as enumerated". The only parishes not included are those in the Brighton are, namely: Patcham, Aldrington, Hangleton, Portslade, Hove , Preston & West Blatchington. The transcription of the 1851 Census for these parishes was completed by Eastbourne FHS and therefore the data is not available in the original Barnes database.

PBN also publishes a transcription of the 1841 Census for East Sussex with the parishes grouped the same manner as the 1851 Census.
