Withyham Inhabitants 1838
Between 1837 and 1842 the parish priest of Withyham compiled miscellaneous information about the parish's inhabitants. The greater part of the material is a register of the inhabitants in 1838. Each household in Withyham is identified and the occupants listed along with their year of birth, place of birth, occupation and whether they could read and write. A brief commentary is then provided on the household. As might be expected, the priest sometimes notes who attended church and who did not; who were members of the church and who were non-conformists; which children were baptized and which not. However, he also showed family relationships, occupations and other personal details that seemed relevant – such as illegitimacy, second marriages and any disabilities suffered by the inhabitants.
At the end of the list of inhabitants is a list of books bought by the poor and others in 1838; a list of the Boys School Rewards at Christmas 1838; and a list of the names, ages, parents and addresses of the boys and girls in the Boot Club in 1838. This transcription is invaluable not just for family historians but for all students of nineteenth century rural history.
